"It's NOT a fan, so it isn't grinding; it's an air pump and it purrs or hums!" 2009-04-18
By Binary Techie (Collegeville, PA United States)
First and most important, all of those people returning their "defective" ovens because of a "grinding" sound coming from the "fan" don't know the first thing about a convection oven, so they're missing out on a great product. It's not a fan, nor is it a grinding sound. It's quite normal and it is only noticeable as the AIR PUMP gets up to speed. After that, it's nothing more than a gentle purring sound. In fact, I just went to the kitchen to move my crab cakes from the MicroWave to the Avante Convection Oven and it sounds less like a purr, than a soft humming sound.

Someone was at least smart enough to compare it to the pumping sound of a dishwasher. I call that smart because that's what they're hearing. It's not a fan; it's an air pump. A fan would never survive the 350-500 degree temperatures of an oven like this. The motor would be right in the path of the hot blasting air.

If not the fan would have to be belt driven (melted rubber anyone?) or gear driven and how would you keep the gears lubricated at 500 degrees?

The bottom line is that this is a great oven for finishing off a quick meal that requires browning, after starting it in the microwave. It's not great as a toaster, but it can't be beat for baking or broiling when you don't need a full-sized oven, and you can reduce the cooking time considerably when baking, thanks to the convection provided by the AIR PUMP!

This item is a good product. Takes up more space than I thought it would. The back of the oven gets really hot, so pull away from the wall. Works well for what it is intended. Easy to use.

"T-Fal Avanti Elite - Promising but Disappointing" 2009-03-11
By Jonas Taub (New Hampshire)
We have owned this toaster oven for 3 years, and it is a mixed review. We have enjoyed its size, both for toasting and for baking. Has been nice for small casseroles, hors d'ouvres and summer alternative to oven. It is slow to warm up, slow to toast, and slow to bake if you do not adjust the temp. We have found that the temperature for the oven is 50 to 75 degrees off. We routinely set the oven that much higher to get the right temp for baking. My biggest complaint is that the control buttons have not been durable. The Temp button got permenantly stuck within the first year. It was fixed under warranty. Now, the Toast button is malfunctioning. It will soon be unusable, and we will need to fix or replace the toaster oven. A toaster oven should last longer than three years, and this one is not inexpensive.

 "GOOD FOR THE PRICE" 2009-01-26
By Pamela J. Walsh (Fitchburg, MA USA)
I GOT THIS TOASTER OVEN LAST WEEK AND SO FAR I AM PLEASED. I DO, HOWEVER, HAVE A FEW NEGATIVE COMMENTS. FIRST THE LACK OF A CLOCK. WHEN THE UNIT IS PLUGGED IN AND NOT BEING USED IT READS ZEROES WHERE A CLOCK SHOULD BE. I JUST UNPLUG MINE BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO SEE THE ZEROES BUT A CLOCK WOULD BE A BIG IMPROVEMENT. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HAVE A PREHEAT FEATURE. I HAD A MUCH SMALLER TOASTER OVEN BEFORE I GOT THIS ONE SO IT HEATED TO THE DESIRED TEMP VERY QUICKLY. WITH THIS OVEN AND IT'S MUCH BIGGER INTERIOR, I AM USING IT FOR THINGS I ALWAYS USED MY REGULAR OVEN FOR IN THE PAST. IT TAKES 10-15 MINUTES TO PREHEAT AND 10-15 MINUTES LONGER TO DO THE ACTUAL COOKING/BAKING SO YOU HAVE TO ADD ALL THIS EXTRA TIME WHEN YOU'RE SETTING THE TIMER----KIND OF A PAIN. I HAVEN'T USED THE WARMER YET BUT I'M SURE IT WILL COME IN HANDY. ONE THING I DID DO WAS BUY AN OVEN LINER. [...] CARRIES ONE SPECIFICALLY FOR TOASTER OVENS BUT I BOUGHT ONE FOR A STANDARD OVEN AND CUT IT TO FIT THE CRUMB TRAY, THE BOTTOM OF THE WARMING COMPARTMENT AND THE WARMING TRAY. THIS SHOULD KEEP THE INTERIOR CLEANER LONGER. HOPE MY REVIEW IS HELPFUL.

 "Top notch" 2009-01-26
By gtrobinsons
I did a LOT of research before I bought a toaster oven. It seemed that none of them had good ratings. I have not been disappointed in my purchase of this one. Yes, it's big, and the warming tray takes up a lot of space. However, it cooks evenly, has easy to use controls, and has more than lived up to my expectations. So yes, a toaster oven can function well!!

This is the best toaster oven we've ever had. We've had it for over a year now and it does exactly waht it says it will do. (It didn't have a convection feature when I bought it, I think someone just screwed up the description, if it doesn't. When I bought it they had 2 ovens, one with convection and one without. (We bought the one withoutO

Great while it works right. My temperature controls are WAAAAAAY off...by 50 degrees. Takes two hours to bake a potato. Mine is only a year old and I used it almost every day. Bought an oven thermomter and tested it....results above. Liked everything else about it...but have had bette, cheaper toaster ovens.

 "WARNING: VERY DANGEROUS!!!!!!!" 2009-06-06
By Concerned Mother (USA)
I got my mom this toaster oven for Mother's Day this year. She thought it was great b/c it is so large and because of the upper & lower trays. However, she only had it a couple weeks when the unthinkable happened. The glass blew out into a million pieces in every direction! Thank goodness she wasn't watching my 1 year old who usually sits near it to eat his breakfast! It is was on a table with nothing/noone near it. My mom had toasted an English muffin and not at a very high temp left the room, noticed it was finished and that the toaster was off, fortunately left the room for a moment again and as she was walking back saw the glass explode everywhere!!!! If she had been even a foot or two closer she would have been impaled by glass! I shutter to think what would've happened had my son been there!!! Nothing touched it or hit it, it just exploded! After she had cleaned up the mess she called TFal and they said they'd send another!!!! Who wants another glass bomb in their house??? They said it wasn't a recall issue and that it was just a flook that this happened. Ok, who really wants to take that chance!!!!

Loved this toaster oven, twice, until....

BOTH of them just up and died within 6 months. It works very well, while it works, But I've had two of them and neither has worked very long. They both just went dark. AVOID.

T-Fal OT8065002 Avante Elite Toaster Oven The toaster oven arrived December 2, and by December 30th, it had quit working. The "on" light functioned, but none of the heating functions. It began again working in Jan., but quit again. I now plan on returning it under warranty. B. Snyder

 "Excellent product" 2009-07-10
By M. Hicks (Lawrenceville, NJ)
I love this oven. The first one I owned died after about 3 years and I bought another brand but had to return to the T-Fal. Bakes/roasts thoroughly and in general performs like a regular oven. Controls are easy to operate and the bun warmer is just a delight.

"After 4 years, still doing its main job well" 2009-07-04
By JJ
I've owned this convection oven almost 4 years and have used it a great deal. The good: as a convection oven it works great. It is easy to set or adjust the cook time and temperature, the rack can hold a good sized dish and their is adequate height to put taller foods in the oven, the unit is small enough to be put away out of sight under a counter. The rack and pan are easy to remove for cleaning. The not-so-good: one of the control buttons was mislabeled (but it is very easy to operate so not a big deal), the bun warmer doesn't work that well, as a toaster it isn't that great but can get by with it if a real toaster isn't available. Bottom line - I always prefer to use this oven instead of my full size oven unless the things I am cooking are too large for the Avante. It heats fast, cooks well, cools quickly, and can be stored out of sight, nice product.

 "Glass shattered" 2009-06-13

Very dangerous. As with all the other reviews here describing the door shattering ours did as well. It shattered and flew everywhere in the kitchen. It ruined our dinner that night because glass was in everything. Do not purchase.

My crab cakes that would have taken 25-28 minutes in a normal oven will now be crisp and ready after 4-5 minutes in the microwave and 2-3 minutes on either side in the convection oven.
