I have had this product about 1 month and I am throwing it out and trying a different brand. The product is poorly constructed -- door does not open and close smoothly. Exterior paint has chips and discolorations. The design of the controls is terrible.

i like this little toaster oven ... and my toast doesn't burn ... the toast feature is essentially good enough ... browns one side a bit more than the other so i have to turn over the toast for even browning ...

but i like the 'stay on' and temperature features ... i use it for baking and that's been quite successful ....

 "Perfectly burns, every time!" 2006-02-05

This delightful appliance has one heating element along the middle at the bottom, and one on top, leaving anything you toast black & singed on whatever part is directly above the element. Nice feature if you like uneven, partially burned toast.

Can't fit 4 Eggo waffles in there, either. I want my old toaster back.

"It's NOT a fan, so it isn't grinding; it's an air pump and it purrs or hums!" 2009-04-18
By Binary Techie (Collegeville, PA United States)
First and most important, all of those people returning their "defective" ovens because of a "grinding" sound coming from the "fan" don't know the first thing about a convection oven, so they're missing out on a great product. It's not a fan, nor is it a grinding sound. It's quite normal and it is only noticeable as the AIR PUMP gets up to speed. After that, it's nothing more than a gentle purring sound. In fact, I just went to the kitchen to move my crab cakes from the MicroWave to the Avante Convection Oven and it sounds less like a purr, than a soft humming sound.

Someone was at least smart enough to compare it to the pumping sound of a dishwasher. I call that smart because that's what they're hearing. It's not a fan; it's an air pump. A fan would never survive the 350-500 degree temperatures of an oven like this. The motor would be right in the path of the hot blasting air.

If not the fan would have to be belt driven (melted rubber anyone?) or gear driven and how would you keep the gears lubricated at 500 degrees?

The bottom line is that this is a great oven for finishing off a quick meal that requires browning, after starting it in the microwave. It's not great as a toaster, but it can't be beat for baking or broiling when you don't need a full-sized oven, and you can reduce the cooking time considerably when baking, thanks to the convection provided by the AIR PUMP!

"T-Fal Avanti Elite - Promising but Disappointing" 2009-03-11
By Jonas Taub (New Hampshire)
We have owned this toaster oven for 3 years, and it is a mixed review. We have enjoyed its size, both for toasting and for baking. Has been nice for small casseroles, hors d'ouvres and summer alternative to oven. It is slow to warm up, slow to toast, and slow to bake if you do not adjust the temp. We have found that the temperature for the oven is 50 to 75 degrees off. We routinely set the oven that much higher to get the right temp for baking. My biggest complaint is that the control buttons have not been durable. The Temp button got permenantly stuck within the first year. It was fixed under warranty. Now, the Toast button is malfunctioning. It will soon be unusable, and we will need to fix or replace the toaster oven. A toaster oven should last longer than three years, and this one is not inexpensive.

 "GOOD FOR THE PRICE" 2009-01-26
By Pamela J. Walsh (Fitchburg, MA USA)
I GOT THIS TOASTER OVEN LAST WEEK AND SO FAR I AM PLEASED. I DO, HOWEVER, HAVE A FEW NEGATIVE COMMENTS. FIRST THE LACK OF A CLOCK. WHEN THE UNIT IS PLUGGED IN AND NOT BEING USED IT READS ZEROES WHERE A CLOCK SHOULD BE. I JUST UNPLUG MINE BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO SEE THE ZEROES BUT A CLOCK WOULD BE A BIG IMPROVEMENT. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HAVE A PREHEAT FEATURE. I HAD A MUCH SMALLER TOASTER OVEN BEFORE I GOT THIS ONE SO IT HEATED TO THE DESIRED TEMP VERY QUICKLY. WITH THIS OVEN AND IT'S MUCH BIGGER INTERIOR, I AM USING IT FOR THINGS I ALWAYS USED MY REGULAR OVEN FOR IN THE PAST. IT TAKES 10-15 MINUTES TO PREHEAT AND 10-15 MINUTES LONGER TO DO THE ACTUAL COOKING/BAKING SO YOU HAVE TO ADD ALL THIS EXTRA TIME WHEN YOU'RE SETTING THE TIMER----KIND OF A PAIN. I HAVEN'T USED THE WARMER YET BUT I'M SURE IT WILL COME IN HANDY. ONE THING I DID DO WAS BUY AN OVEN LINER. [...] CARRIES ONE SPECIFICALLY FOR TOASTER OVENS BUT I BOUGHT ONE FOR A STANDARD OVEN AND CUT IT TO FIT THE CRUMB TRAY, THE BOTTOM OF THE WARMING COMPARTMENT AND THE WARMING TRAY. THIS SHOULD KEEP THE INTERIOR CLEANER LONGER. HOPE MY REVIEW IS HELPFUL.

I did a LOT of research before I bought a toaster oven. It seemed that none of them had good ratings. I have not been disappointed in my purchase of this one. Yes, it's big, and the warming tray takes up a lot of space. However, it cooks evenly, has easy to use controls, and has more than lived up to my expectations. So yes, a toaster oven can function well!!

 "Superior small appliance" 2009-07-25
By jk202 (Oakland, CA United States)
Don't know if this model is still available, but I agree with other posters that this is a superior product. I hated our old DeLonghi and find this superior in every way. It's an excellent small oven - I do a lot of sear-roasting and this is much better than heating up a 4 cu.ft. range oven on a hot day, for two small steaks!

Biggest disadvantage: If you are toasting bread in successive batches, the preheating makes the oven shorten the toasting time. Sometimes you have to fiddle with the settings a little, but this is a very minor inconvenience.

I have ruined many a dinner.... because the rack inside is not secure and it falls out easily. Thanks a lot you miserable fricking designers for this wonderful feature. Just tonight.... trying my best to get dinner on the table was disappointed by the flaw that sent all of the asparagus to the floor. Lovely... why don't we have the designers of this oven come and mop my floor now. Anyway... whatever....... It's mine now... and it will live it's life out with me gingerly going about making dinner. NOT WORTH THE MONEY! Buy something else. Dissatisfied beyond belief at this point.... Mis L.

 "Bakes great, Won't toast" 2009-03-28
By J. Brooking (NC USA)
I have had three of this defective product - original and two replacements. Each exhibited the same problem: would toast the top of the bread (or whatever) perfectly, and leave the bottom crisp, but white.

Oven functions well, good size. But if it won't toast, what good is it? Surely not worth the price. The last "customer service" dude at Cuisinart said maybe the manual was wrong and the tray that holds the bread for toasting should be down close to the bottom heating elements. That caused poor toasting on top and burning on the bottom. I am donating this turkey to a local charity and buying something that will toast bread or a sandwich! $200 down the drain. Thanks, Cuisinart!

"Still working great after 3 years" 2009-03-15

I have had my Cuisinart Toaster Oven for over 3 years now and use it almost every day. It works as good today as it did the day I got it. As a matter of fact, my regular gas oven has quit working and I have put off buying a new one since I rely on my toaster oven so much. Granted, I can't bake anything in large quantities but it's given me time to shop around to find exactly what I want. I would highly recommend this oven to a single person or small family who doesn't need to bake large amounts. It is one of the best purchases I have made and if it were to quit working I would not hesitate to buy a new one. It' just a great little oven ! As to comments about having to reset all the settings when the timer goes off and you need a longer cooking time - just push the timer button for however more minutes you need . Don't push the stop button. The minutes you enter will blink on the display for a couple seconds but then it will continue your baking for however many more minutes you entered.

 "Piece of Junk" 2009-01-22
By Christina E. Baker (Fountain, CO)
I bought this toaster when my toaster of 13 years died. My kitchen is white so I was limited in choice. I chose this one because the features were similar to my old one, it was white and it wasn't huge! BIG WASTE OF MONEY. Like many others have commented, it gets extremely hot. I have tried to use the broiler oven feature and it does not maintain its temprature so you can't really use it to cook small oven items. Basically a piece of junk. I am glad it was cheap because I really would have been upset! Black and Decker should be ashamed of this product. One star is being generous!

 "Save your money!" 2009-03-01
By Nanny (Hadley, MI USA)
We purchased this product from an brick and mortar store on 2/14/08. It is not as it was advertised from the manufacturers. We purchased it for the main use of a rotisserie.

First of all, it takes apx. 2.5 hours to broil a 7 lb chicken. If you can successfully get the chicken in the oven and it remains on the spit for the full time. I don't know how many times we had to remove the chicken to re-tie it and re-insert it into the oven.

Second, the tines/forks are very flimsy. They start to bend and flex with the movement of the spit. They will not stay in the chicken. The wing nuts that screw into the tines will not stay snug on the rod. They even got stripped over a period of a few months usage. (Mind you, we would only use the rotisserie feature once a month)

Third, the lowest shelf for the rack sits too close so that as the chicken rotates, it rubs against the tray and often prevents the chicken from rotating.

Fourth, the tray often would warp, and rise on one end or the other, thereby causing the juices to run off of the tray.

After all of that, after a year of using it about once a month, it will not rotate the chicken completly, but does a half rotate, browning only one side of the bird.

I guess if you buy this for the other features, it may be ok. But why would you want such a large countertop oven that takes up so much of its space! Especially if you can't use all of its features.

What a waste of time, space, and money! Save these precious things and look elsewhere!

 "Great little oven" 2009-02-14
By D. Vallone (Saint Cloud, FLORIDA United States)
I bought this oven to save from turning on my big kitchen oven for smaller items. The first thing I made was a rotisserie chicken. I have never cooked one before. It came out fantastic. The directions were easy to follow. I was amazed at how juicy it was and no mess. What an easy clean up. Since then, we have cooked burgers, chicken breasts on the convection setting. I would recommend this oven. It is the right size pizza, snacks and you can do larger items as well. The clean up once again is amazingly simple. I lined the tray with foil to make it even easier. I hope this helps you.

"Sadly, had to send it back" 2009-02-08
By R. Roberts (Springfield, MO)
With high hopes we purchased the Hamilton Beach counter top convection oven. We researched several different ovens, and based on the reviews chose this one. We tried it out the first day, and noticed that when taking it out of the box the top of the oven had several small dents in it. We decided that the dents alone weren't a problem, we could live with them, but once we turned it on (following the manufacturers recommendations) the convection setting had an awful rattling noise. It was so loud it actually vibrated items on the counter sitting close to it. We cooked two meals in it and decided that the noise just couldn't be right and wasn't acceptable. We did not want to listen to that every time we cooked something. So we decided to send it back and purchased a Breville through Amazon instead. Hopefully, the next convection oven will be a winner.

It does a nice job toasting. For broiling, I find it takes longer than my old toaster oven, esp. when using frozen food, and doesn't brown too well.

I also find it odd that one is supposed to keep the oven open when broiling. It seems awfully wasteful. I haven't used it for baking.

 "Toasts great!" 2009-06-04
By marionette77 (Ithaca, NY)
Again I find myself wishing I could give a product more than one rating because this thing makes great toast. The shade adjuster is great. I'm picky about my toast's color. I found that when I had the tray inserted as pictured, the bottom of my toast burned. No problems since I've flipped the tray over. Wonderful english muffin pizzas come out of this thing too.

I'd give it 1 star for safety. Every single toaster I have ever had in my entire life has turned off immediately when the door was opened. This one does not. The heating bars inside stay red even when the door is opened. I've gotten used to hitting the "stop" button before opening the door.

"Too bad white is a premium color" 2009-02-24
By Bonnie (Potomac, MD)
After several recent short lived Black and Decker toaster oven experiences, we once again needed to replace our toaster oven. Our kitchen is white. I had no idea how this would influence my choice. I did my homework but in the end, a black toaster oven would look like a black hole on the counter. Altho I feel we paid a premium price for white, I am in general happy with the product. The rack is a little flimsy, it can easily fall right out of the toaster oven when removing the foil wrapped item if you're not careful. We had to get used to the fact that opening the door did not turn off the heating element. But it does the job-at least it has for the 6 wks we've owed it.

This toaster oven worked okay the first 3 times I used it and then it completely stopped working - nothing! I only used it once to toast bread and it worked okay, although didn't brown evenly. I used it 2 times to warm-up/brown pre-cooked chicken patties. The chicken worked great, but not today. Now I have to lug it to the service place. This was the first item I've purchased by Delonghi - will not buy a Delonghi brand again.

 "WONDERFUL OVEN!" 2009-02-01
By R. Witherspoon (Hatfield, PA USA)
I've had this very oven for about 3 years with no problems. However, my heavy-handed husband has broken the middle dial (the one that sets the timer or turns on until you turn it off). He didn't know it was unplugged and used force on the knob unnecessarily. I am in search of a replacement of the same (stainless - not black), but it's been hard to find. So, I thought I'd try another model, but everything out there seems to be convection (which I do not want); does not have the interior light (which is WONDERFUL!!); and/or does not pop-out the tray/rack when you open the oven door (DELIGHTFUL FEATURE). So, I've become spoiled and am now on the hunt for the same Delonghi that I had. The cool sides are great. The size is perfect. You can cook everything from a whole chicken to a full-sized pizza, and the interior light keeps you from having to open the door too much to check on the food's progress. My only complaint would be that I would have liked to receive two oven racks instead of one in the box; one for the bottom and one for the top, so that I can bake two levels at the same time. Even so, I give it a 5-star.

"Loved but died after 1.5 years" 2009-01-18
By Marlene (San Diego, CA USA)
We loved our Delonghi and although it was big for a small kitchen it worked great for pizzas, cookies, toast and bagel bites. Cooked perfectly with no burning on top. Also we loved that we could "bake" on a hot day without heating the house with the full size oven. Sadly one day it just stopped working. We thought a fuse had blown for the outlet as there was no warning. I am trying out another brand but miss the light which it had when it opened, tray popping out when you open door, the not burning so am thinking of trying again despite the early demise.
