"Poor excuse for a toaster oven" 2009-09-25
By wcd16 (MA)
After 5 years of constant use, our little 4 slice toaster oven died, and missing the convenience of the small oven, I set on a quest to find a new one. I've read many reviews of both the ovens and the companies. We finally settled on the HB 31506. It seemed to have everything we needed. What a mistake! Where do I begin? The dials are almost impossible to read; it took 15 minutes to toast english muffins, then they fell on the floor; and the crumb tray is only accessible by manuevering around the heating elements. Why? Poor design. Here's the saga of the poor floor-bound engish muffins. I followed the directions to the letter (literally-I read the handy instruction booklet). What the book or anything else doesn't mention is that the rack does not advance when you open the door. So, I found some tongs and a pot holder to try to remove the rack. In doing so and too late, I realized that there is nothing to pevent the rack from tipping forward. The rack tipped, the muffins slid, and I gave up and had a bowl of cerial. Needless to say, the oven is back in the box and going back to the store.

Basically, what was HB thinking?

 "overcoming prejudice" 2009-07-31
By E. Klatt (CA USA)
For some reason, the nameplate HAMILTON BEACH never clicked with me as an appliance super star, or even star. I stand corrected. I took a flier and bought this thinking it would probably go back. I'd done the same with other more expensive and disappointing toaster ovens so hope was not high.

This oven has been a happy surprise. My acid test is this; one toasted piece of bread. How even is the brown. If it goes well here, all else will follow. I'm very happily surprised by the result and hope for a long life from this little box. The overall build quality is good. My only reservation would be - how long will the twisting timer last. It could become an issue, but I think that would happen far down the road. A toast to H.B.

"Glad I bought this one" 2008-05-15
By Wilda (Atlanta, GA)
I was a little leary of paying over $100 for a toaster oven, but I'd done a bit of research online, and liked what I'd read about this Krups FBC1. I'm SO glad I went ahead and got this. It works beautifully - heats up very quickly, easy to use, and all the functions (toaster, broiler, bake) work well. If you toast 4 or more slices at once, you may see a bit of steam emanate for a few seconds, but I think that's just from built up condensation. My kids use it to heat their after-school snacks, so you know it's easy to use. I like the 4-position rack system and the chart showing which level to put the rack at depending on what you're cooking and what method you're using. It's digital which makes it very easy to switch temperature and/or cooking time while it's in use. And it comes with a handy little utensil you can use to hook onto the rack and pull it out to retrieve your food. I wish it came in white, but that's a minor detail. I'm very happy with this purchase!

My husband bought this product becuase he thought Krups was a good name. He spent lots of money on it thinking it would last. Wrong! The springs broke on the door and it wouldn't stay shut, then it just stopped working. A lot of money for a piece of crap!

"Now this is more like it..." 2007-12-23
By Albert Taylor
I've owned a few toaster ovens over the years and this is a very well designed and just all around great toaster oven. Plenty of room and I like how it's easy to use, easy to set time and temperature. Heats up quickly and I like the dual, upper/lower heating method.

The default settings make it easy to get started. The toast feature makes it easy to either quickly make toast or just warm up frozen waffles. I use the default 4 for toast, 3 for frozen waffles, and 1 or 2 to warm up a biscuit or two. No more fumbling around with a dial to try and get it in between markings...

It has a longer than usual 90 minute timer and it shuts off automatically when it's done with five chimes, just great. Looks great too!

 "Nice toaster oven" 2007-11-01
By J. Kelly (Seattle, WA)
This is a nice toaster oven - it is roomy inside, the controls are easy to learn and use, and it heats evenly. It takes longer to toast bread than I would like, but overall it is nicer than other toaster ovens I have used. The instruction manual says to turn on the oven for 15 minutes to burn off any residue (the smell people complain about) before cooking any food. I did this, and had no subsequent problems with chemical odors.

"Outstanding, with only little room for improvement" 2007-08-17
By T. Kaiser
My fiancee laughs because I can't make a trip to the fridge without research. So graduating from a low-end B&D, I first came up with a short list of four toasterovens. After some more research and print-outs (waiters at our table quipping "are we in the market for a toaster oven?") we finally picked the FBC1, despite some hesitation on my fiancee's part if we really needed a kitchen device competing in size with our Isomac espresso maker (...well, close).

Resumee after one month's use:

+ oven heat-up time is neglegible, it's that fast

+ if you've worked in a restaurant kitchen, you've worked with a salamander. The Krups is probably as close as a consumer version gets, including quartz lamps and two broil settings. This thing cranks out serious heat when you need it

+ thermostat measures the temps inside the oven

+ swallows a 9x9 pyrex pan - I was baffled

+ good results as well in toaster-function

+ display illumination goes off after use, saving power (LCD itself stays on)

- measure your counter before you buy; it's not exactly petite (though not a hog either)

- an optional under-the-counter mount would be great

- controls are ok for digital, but take a few times to get used to. My pref (and the only improvement I'd suggest) would be digital settings controlled by turn-knobs.

Would we buy the FBC1 again if it took off into outer space? In a heartbeat, without any further research.

I bought mine at MENARDS for $49.99 04/10/2009

and it works very well for just about anything

like pizza, steak, hamburgers and casseroles.

I like to toast my bread for a sandwich or hamburger/hotdog buns

and it does not toast evenly, the back gets toasted before the front.

but just rotate the rack and it ok.

the other reviewers don't seem to be to bright.

 "disappointing" 2007-10-21
By Erika A. Nygard (Ma., United States)
Had this toaster oven about a year and the top elements don't work anymore and so I can't toast. I don't recommend this oven. It has an annoying hyperactive tick as it toasts, and it never really did a great job with toasting - I should get a real toaster - it did a fair job baking although hard to know what the real temperature is as the dials are not particularly accurate. I have decided that for my needs, my gas oven does a great job baking and broiling, and so I am going to get a real toaster as that is what I used this device for the most.

"The Markings & Numbers Wore Off With Cleaning" 2007-03-08
By P. Land (USA)
I had this oven for about six months and the numbers and markings wore off with cleaning. I am not a compulsive cleaner and probably only cleaned it once every two or three weeks.

B&D replaced the oven with another one when I called them and mailed them the end of the electrical cord and an additional $7.50. They didn't have a white one so they sent black. It has been about six months now and again the numbers and markings are wearing off the second one.

They are sending me another oven, as soon as I send the the cord end and a letter statng the problem. They also wanted me to send another $7.50 but waived the fee when I said I would not give them more money.

They suggested that what I use to clean the toaster ovens was too harsh. I use the same thing on every appliance in the kitchen and this is the only one to lose the markings.

 "A Solid Little Oven" 2006-12-29
By L. Newell (Indianapolis, IN)
This is a great little toaster oven! Heats up pretty fast and even, toasts pretty even & not too slow (about 3 - 4 minutes for medium) and broils such things as fish sticks and chicken nuggets quick and crispy. And unlike MANY toaster ovens, the door closes tight. Love the removable crumb tray and adjustable rack. My last oven was a B&D and it lasted 12 years. In reading many toaster oven reviews I am amazed at the number of people that really don't understand what a toaster oven is for. It's pretty simple. If you want fast toast, get a toaster. If you want to bake great, use a large oven. Toaster ovens are for those in between jobs. And this one has performed great for the last 4 months.

 "Not so good......" 2006-09-03
By P. Cyr
My old Black and Decker toaster oven died after 5 years (shouldn't they last longer!?) but we liked it ok so I went to find another. I bought this newer model hoping for similar performance and a longer lifespan, but I am sad to say that we'll never find out about the lifespan because we returned it after just 3 weeks. Like so many of the reviews I've read for other ovens, it baked ok, but toasted unevenly. It has two rack levels, but one is too high and the other too low for toasting. Also, the timer ticks so loudly that it is an annoyance. Where oh where is the quality, Black and Decker????

I would look elsewhere, this is not well designed.

By G. George (Boston, MA USA)
This does a pretty good job of toasting. The only thing I don't like about it is there is no release button to pop-up your toast early. And because of the way it is designed, it is hard to push up on the arm without touching a hot part of the metal.

By M. Philips (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This toaster broke after just a short period of use. The temperature setting dial broke and it doesn't work anymore. Worked OK when it worked, but due to flimsy manufacturing it will not last long. You get what you pay for for $15 right? I'd recommend one spend the extra $10 and get a sturdier construction and longer-lasting toaster.

By C. Wilson (Mpls, MN)
If a person wants a basic toaster, this is it. It works like a charm. It toasts both sides very evenly for great color. It adjusts for either bread or bagels. It is Consumer Report's # 3 for best picks under it's previous model number.

It doesn't have a quick release which I'm getting used to very quickly, now that I know it doing what it's supposed to every time.

this product reduces cooking time by eliminating preheating. the foods turn out exactly as if you used your full sized oven. this oven is great for fast foods. i.e. pizza, toast, bagels, reheat leftovers. it is also ideal because it does not heat up your kitchen like a traditional oven does. i recommend this product.

"There is a reason most recipes are with frozen food..." 2008-08-16
By Karen Seavey (Chicago, IL)
This oven only does slightly better than a typical rotisserie or toaster type oven. If you are broiling a steak, unless you like your meat well done, you should start with frozen meat in order to get a browned surface with a pink center. The recipe book that comes with it only has a few examples and the pre-programed selections do not accomplish a proper product without adjustments to the time. It has a setting for rising crust pizza (like DiJourno) which starts with 14 minutes. A regular oven is 22 to 25 minutes. At 14 minutes, the pizza had risen but the crust was still very soft and the cheese was not even browned at all. I added time, and ended up at over 20 minutes with a pizza that was too soft and floppy. The same with frozen french fries. I expected a web site that would give more direction in how to use the oven but all the B & D web site has is the recipe book in pdf form.

As far as the rotisserie, the oven is not really big enough to even accomodate a medium sized chicken. I did do a small pork roast which came out nicely done. But it had to be a small roast to not touch the element guards. For the price, I was rather disappointed.

"Got a couple of years use out of it but..." 2009-09-16
By Brutal Q (NJ)
I've actually owned this for a couple of years now and it has been great for chicken nuggets for the kids, hot dogs, quick meals like that. Was never crazy about it as a toaster and never tried to cook a big meal with it (anything bigger than a hot dog anyways!)

I wanted to write this though because like some others, we woke up this morning to this thing being on and very hot. That had never happened before. Something inside it must have given up and now it does not matter if you use the power switch or not, the unit will always be on and heating at what seems to be full blast as long as it is plugged in. Unfortunately, with this being the case, you can't even control the temperature or any of the other cooking settings, its either full blast when plugged in, or nothing at all when unplugged. The controls are merely for show at this point. Obviously this is a huge fire hazard because this thing gets very very hot.

I gave two stars because it worked well for what we needed it for for the past couple of years but now its just a dangerous product to have. I got two years out of it, others seem to have gotten less time than that so please be aware before purchasing this that at some point, there is a good chance of this happening to you.

Just an fyi, I did try it on a few different outlets to make sure it wasn't the house electrical system and this is unfortunately broken on all outlets. Also, I cant seem to find this for sale or in any historical information on Black and Decker's website so it appears that they have cut ties with this unit.

 "food doesn't get hot" 2008-01-18
By Calamity Jane (Virginia)
We bought this oven four months ago to replace a swanky Krups one that exploded, and so far, the only thing it's good at is making toast. We've cooked several different foods in it -- salmon, sweet potatoes, meatloaf -- and reheated things like pizza, French fries and chicken tenders. While the salmon broils in 5 minutes, half the time it usually would, it's barely lukewarm. It's cooked, just not hot. The sweet potatoes just wouldn't cook, and we ended up having to microwave them while we ate the rest of our Thanksgiving dinner! We had to finish the meatloaf in the microwave too.

It's also really, really small inside. The largest tray that will fit it is 7" x 9". NOT big enough for squat. It only holds two slices of pizza (and those didn't get hot after 7 minutes; I could stick my finger right on the cheese, when in my previous toaster oven it was hot enough after a 5-minute reheating that I couldn't eat it right away).

Luckily the local store we bought this from is AWESOME and will take it back, even after a few months of use. It just doesn't do the job. Don't waste your money!

 "Fire Hazard!" 2007-12-26
By Dave Faris (Washington, DC)
A month ago, I posted a 4-star review of this product. I thought it worked pretty well. It was fast and easy to use and required no pre-heating.

Tonight, I woke up to an apartment full of smoke. The unit turned itself on and it was baking itself. The way the unit turns on, I know that it couldn't have been activated by user error -- no careless brush against the control panel would turn it on, as you actually need to press several buttons in order to turn it on. In fact, I hadn't used the oven in about a week -- Yet, there it was, tonight, glowing in the dark kitchen. I pulled the plug. There's a bit of a scorch mark on the wall behind it, but aside from the acrid smoke, I caught it before it did any more damage. I just now did a search on the web, and I've seen several accounts similar to mine.

I would feel awful if someone bought the oven on my advice and suffered a fate worse than mine. Please don't buy this oven, or, if you do, keep it unplugged when not in use.
