 "Awful!" 2009-07-22
By MyPenName (Pennsylvania)
Ok, first of all, my set was light gold in color and did not seem to have any nonstick surface to it!

The pans are so thin and lightweight that they bend easily. The tray has already warped after the first use. They are soooo cheap looking and feeling. As I was washing the deeper pan, it was bending and popping all over the place. This set is a HUGE disappointment. You might as well just go buy the disposable aluminum foil pans.

The rack was inside the deeper pan during shipping and it made scratches and black/grey marks on the pan that did not come off.

I saw that people have said the Teflon is coming off of their pans after the first use, but mine do not seem to have any Teflon or any other type of coating. It is like a raw, gritty finish on my set.

I do not recommend this set unless you can get it under 5 bucks, you have low expectations, and want a more disposable set.

 "Satisfied" 2009-06-23

The baking pan exactly fits our toaster oven--which was the reason for purchase. I didn't need another low-sided pan or broiling/cooling rack, but occasionally put them to use as a cover for the cake, and a place to cool it after baking.

The ware looks like hand washing will be necessary prolong life - no claim was given to be dishwasher-safe.

 "It Doesn't Fit" 2009-05-02
By I. Gross Georg (Edmond, Oklahoma USA)
It's a nice idea though. I bought it to use with my Euro-Pro 4 slice toaster oven to bake and broil in, since I use it moreso than my regular stove and oven. but the Pans are wider than the door to the oven, they won't even go inside except at an angle, which of course makes it useless to me. The rack does fit, but is smaller than the rack that came with the oven so, can't really use that either. I'm either going to have to get a bigger toaster oven or use some of those disposable aluminum loaf and cake pans and see if they'll do the job instead.

Krups high-speed quartz heating system takes masterful control of heat in the chamber. Each set of quartz heating element, both top and bottom, is alternately powered at the full 1600 watts to maximize the effect of radiant heat. The heat distribution is aided by a special reflective crumb tray that directs this important form of heat to all corners for excellent results. Convection heat, important for longer baking times, circulates heated air around the food for the best result in the fastest time. The defrost function uses the convection fan only and gently and evenly defrosts food without producing hot spots. This 6-slice toaster oven has temperature controls in 25 degree increments from 150-450 degrees, a digital timer from 1 minute to 90 minutes and an auto shut off after elapsed time. For toasting, it has 9 levels or browning with a countdown timer. Illuminated LCD control panel with easy to use controls and high quality soft touch buttons, it has a digital clock that displays when the cooking functions are not in use. The non-stick interior surface is durable and easy to clean. If you are worried about the price... Don't buy this. If you are worried about how much it costs to run it... Don't buy it. This toaster oven worked for a couple of years and then one day went dead. When I opened it up to a take a look I noticed the ground wire was burned to a crisp. I couldn't figure out if it had come dislodged and touched a hot wire or if there was a bigger problem. So I fixed the wiring and tried it again, but immediately the ground wire started smoking. I don't even want to know what could be causing it, it's going in the trash.

 "Another piece of Krups" 2009-07-24

We purchased this as a smaller, easier to use oven. We have had this unit for 6-8 months now. The buttons have started to be glitchy. When you hit the toast button, it toggles on and off a few times even though you are only depressing it once. Wont last much longer. We should have known better. Same "quality" as the coffee maker we purchased a few years ago. It lasted a year and was gone. Figured it was a fluke and purchased another. When it lasted about the same time we switched to Capresso. Have had that for 5+ years now. Kraps is the worst brand across the board I have had experience with. Will never buy another one of their products again. 3 time loser!

I did have one problem. The first one i recived freaked out on me and had to be unplugged to be turned off during toasting twice. Macyes sent out a replacement ASAP and there have been no problems with the second one (stuff happens).

"We Use This Toaster Almost Every Day" 2009-07-14
By Kat (San Francisco, CA)
In 2006, my husband and I received the Krups Convection Toaster Oven as a Bridal Shower gift. Since we got married, we've used this oven practically every day. We've toasted waffles, bread, and danishes in it. We've baked chicken wings into crispy perfection. Baked Brie will forever be made in this oven as it fits one inside perfectly. This powerful little oven helped save us during a house party when our normal sized oven was full and we needed to heat up some last minute appetizers. While it does take a little longer than most toasters to toast breads and such, it does it with such precision that we've actually never burned anything in this oven. The auto-shut off feature also ensures that none of our meals are ever overcooked.

This fantastic little toaster has survived two moves and countless meals - I have nothing bad to say about this toaster and cannot recommend it highly enough! Highly recommended!

 "Works Like a Charm" 2009-08-13
By C. Frieder (Santa Monica, CA USA)
I just read an unfavorable review and feel the need to chime in here, in defense of a great appliance which I heartily recommend, and would buy again in a heartbeat. I bought mine well over a year ago and have had no performance issues with the toaster at all. True, it doesn't have specific temperature settings, but between choosing one's combination of burner elements to use and the timer function, pretty much all bases are covered and there's no lack of versatility. Mastery of this little machine is achieved within, like, just a couple of toastings. Looks may not be everything, sure, but everyone who visits invariably remarks and asks about my toaster. It's just that cool-looking, no bull. The usual toasters you see at Target or wherever are bulky, shoddily built, and poorly designed. I adore and endorse my wonderful Toasty, without any reservations whatsoever. Call me a Toasty fanatic. I am.

"Nice and compact but VERY slow" 2009-06-14
By AJ (NY)
We do like the small footprint in our small NYC kitchen, but this toaster takes its time! When I set the dial on the darkest, it takes well over 5 minutes and the toast is still very light. It takes about 8 minutes total to get it toasted, not dark even, just medium. Also, there's no way to turn it off, so if you want to take out the food prematurely you just have to let it sit there empty and wind down.

Just bought this toaster 2 months ago and have it is just perfect for our apartment space.

It's not slow at all not sure what some people meant in the customer review.

It is small and at times we have to cut up the bread to fit; but that's okay.

Design is cute too. But bottom line; efficient. In one review I read someone had this for 12-14 years- worth getting one.

 "A Woman's Perspective: Just A (Crappy) Cute Toaster" 2009-03-23
By EMA (New York)
**Before I go further, I must preface my review with the fact that I've used toaster ovens most of my life for toasting, not toasters, and my last toasting implement before this one was, indeed, a toaster oven.

For the life of me, I cannot understand what all the 5-star reviews are about. This item is just a glorified toaster -- a poorly designed one, at that -- and can't do anything a wide mouth toaster couldn't do. The name "toasty oven" is completely misleading since it implies that it is a toaster oven, which, no doubt, was NO accident and carefully named by the company. A far as I'm concerned, it's useless across the board since one can toast bread on a stovetop skillet more evenly than this can do (as I did for months before my boyfriend purchased this without my knowledge).

I would not recommend this to anyone, for any reason, unless they were making a purchase strictly based on aesthetics. That is basically the only pro I can see, as listed below.

PROS:

1. Supercute.

CONS:

1. Ridiculously Difficult To Clean -- I am by NO means a clean freak, but I am fairly meticulous about "runaway" food on the counters, floors and in appliances. It is super hard to adequately clean this appliance with just a rag/paper towel and a quick swipe. The design/construction only allows for half the crumbs that fall to actually land in the crumb tray. The racks partially pull out when the door is opened (WITH the door), and since most crumbs drop when placing items in and out of the toaster, the rest land on the door (which, basically, serves as an extender to the crumb tray). You CAN'T remove the racks (they're somehow attached to the door and move in conjunction with it) so all the crumbs that fall on the door through the rack STAY there. Even when you jiggle, shake, and knock it over the garbage or sink. You need to somehow squeeze your hand in between the door and bottom rack or THROUGH the rack to try and dislodge all the crumbs. There's also a little "lip" on the door, where glass meets metal, and this creates a little crevice for all the crumbs to get stuck in. THEN, there's the space between the door (on the bottom) where it meets the rest of the toaster -- whatever crumbs are loose and DO fall from the door on their own land on THAT ledge and not actually in the crumb tray. It's just poorly designed (for cleaning) all across the board.

2. It's Just A Toaster -- All it does is toast! And unevenly at THAT! It burns rolls, especially, where the element reaches through the racks. Despite the thin gridding on the rack, toasting to more than a golden color leaves a grill-type mark on the bread as if GRILLED. I've experimented with items and the toaster turning the dial to "top & bottom" with things just on the bottom or top, "top" for things on the bottom and vice versa, and, of course, used it as intended ("top & bottom" when toasting items on top and bottom). Items almost always get burned on one side and nicely toasted on the other; there's no happy medium. (I have never used the "Bagel's Best" setting.) If you want things evenly toasted, you need to flip halfway through to ensure so.

3. Not Much Of A Space Saver -- It's got the same basic width and depth measurements as a regular toaster, though, SLIGHTLY more compact, but still only houses 2 pieces of normal-sized bread (3 if you cut one in half and divide between the two racks). I don't see how this item is any way more advantageous than a regular toaster. ESPECIALLY when it costs DOUBLE the amount (according to an Amazon product search at time of review) and as much as a regular toaster OVEN which both toasts AND bakes.

4. The Timer Will Run Without Electricity -- For any energy savers out there, this is for you. I try to unplug whatever I can when not using it since items continuously use up energy even when not in use if still attached to an outlet. I do this with the toaster especially since it's easy to unplug and not used often, but a lot of times I forgot to plug it back in when I stick bread in there. The timer knob will still tick away, falsely giving the impression that it's plugged in, on, and heating your bread. Only til I come back 10 minutes later and see my still cold bread do I realize what I did. A small thing but VERY annoying, ESPECIALLY when you come back expecting to find warm crisp bread in there. Bumm-er!

5. The Provided Trays -- WHAT can anyone do with those things? They're SO small and shallow, I can't imagine them having any actual, functional purpose.

For anyone looking to this item, I'd suggest saving your money by getting either a regular toaster or investing a little more for an actual toaster oven which will, no doubt, serve you much more diligently than this thing.

I was a little worried about getting a "low end" appliance like this, but it does everything I need to. Keep in mind that I'm no chef, but this thing works great, in my opinion. Cooks frozen meals, heats things up, does toast, etc.

If you're serious about cooking, this probably wouldn't work for you. Works for a "bachelor pad" application though, which is why I use it for.

 "Good enough" 2009-06-08
By Sunshine Granny
Like one of the other reviewers, I purchased this model to replace an old B&D "under-the-shelf" model. My only complaint about this new model is that it's bigger and more awkward than my old one was, and than it needs to be. I also wish the directions were a little more "intuitive," so that guests could use it without needing to consult the manual. On the bright side, I think the new one toasts a little better than the older model. So far, unlike some of the other reviewers, my toast has not caught fire, although now I'm a little worried about that! (Those reviews were not available when I ordered this model or I never would have bought it, I just hope the other reviewers were the exception and not the rule!)

"Nice toaster - great value" 2009-01-11
By G. Sweeney (Boston, MA USA)
I read lots and lots of reviews of toaster ovens before I bought. But it seems that very few people out there like the toaster oven they have. The ones with the highest ratings were only available online - and in some cases the shipping was almost as much as the toaster!

I got this one at a local store - on sale. It is a nice compact size for the counter, yet seems to have plenty of space inside. Toasts very even (several settings - chose medium the first time and worked perfect). It has a timer so there is a bell when the toast is finished.

I also like the fact that when you use the oven, you also can set a timer. My previous one did not have this and many times I would forget to shut it off and it would run for hours (very dangerous).

I am very pleased with this toaster oven overall -- it does the job it is supposed to and is a great value for the money.

While the size and color are perfect, I find that the oven does not automatically shut off when you open the door during the toasting stage. I can understand if it was in the baking stage but not the toasting. Having had toaster ovens that do shut off, I find I must pull the plug to stop the toasting process. Also, the control knob is a bit difficult to use. Food must be put in the middle of the toaster oven otherwise it does not cook conformly.

 "PIECE OF JUNK" 2009-03-02
By A. Gift For You (Cranford, NJ)
This is the worst toaster oven I have ever bought! It says it's a 4 toast toaster, but you can only toast two pieces given the way it works! First of all, you have to put the two pieces of bread in the middle of the toaster, as if you put them in the back, they will burn; if you put them in the front, they won't toast enough. You have to toast everything twice, as the first time never toasts it enough, no matter what setting you put it on (unless you like REALLY light toast, then it works just fine for that). I had to give this toaster a star in order to fulfill the requirements of amazon to give a review. Really, I don't even give it the one, it's a zero star toaster. I don't know about the oven capibilities as I would NEVER use it as an oven given its excellent toasting abilities. Do not buy this toaster, it's a waste of money.

"I am pleased with this product." 2009-06-16
By Donna Little
After one of the heating elements in my Krups toaster oven died after a year and a half, I began my internet research on what to buy for another toaster oven. The qualities I was looking for were: not too big for my counter; easy and quick for making toast or bagels; easy to clean; oven that had enough space from the heating unit so as not to burn rolls;and economically priced. This meets all these requirements, and there was a bonus. The front glass door rolls back into the unit, rather than dropping down onto the counter. This gives more room in front for buttering the toast, etc. The only small complaint is that all of the crumbs do not end up on the crumb tray, so it takes a little extra effort to sweep them away. But not a big issue.

By J. Dibble (CT, USA)
I have used this proctor silex several months now almost on a daily basis. Although it was considerably cheaper than many high end toaster ovens, I wish I had spent the extra money to get a better product. I mostly use it to toast, occasionally to broil. It toasts VERY unevenly. Burn spots in some places, not cooked at all in others. I also find I typically have to flip what I'm toasting around and reset it for another toasting cycle. The feature I like about it is that it's compact and the door slides up instead of flipping out, but it is hard to clean.

"Great if you need a separate gluten-free oven or just want to save power." 2009-02-01
By Lisa M. Mims (Austin, TX United States)
In an effort to save on power costs, I bought this to bake in, rather than heating up my whole (in Texas) townhouse. I also have a relative with celiac who lives in a non-gluten-free home, and I wanted to try to develop recipes that she could make for herself separately while the gluten-eaters are doing their own cooking. A toaster oven like this is fantastic for that purpose. So far, I have baked fish, peanutbutter cookies, falafel, homemade gluten-free pizza crust, lentil casserole, tostadas, gluten-free bread in a pyrex bread pan, and gluten-free brownies in this. I think you could also use this for gluten-free chicken bites and fish sticks.

It heats up fast; it comes with a pan that fits in the oven and an easy-to-remove crumb tray; there are no odd chemical smells, and the slide-down front cover saves space on the countertop (it only takes up the space of the actual toaster oven, not the counter space in front of the oven as well.) More importantly, it has a timer that will turn the oven off when 15 minutes are up; that's very helpful if you're one of those people who tends to wonder about leaving appliances on, or you actually do leave appliances on.

I'm only giving it four stars, though--it will brown and bake with very little mess--but it doesn't toast bread, even though it has little bread icons and a 'toast' setting. It is, however, good for crisping up storebought gluten-free bread that has gotten a little too solid. So, I'd give it four and a half stars, really. It's almost perfect.

Edit: I figured out how to get it to toast--put in on "Broil" for the amount of time you would toast. I suppose this now gets 4 3/4 stars.

 "toaster oven" 2009-01-22
By C. Hildreth (inverness florida)
I researched this purchase and decided on this toaster oven because of its size. I have a small kitchen and this does not take up much counter space. Love the retro style. Like the ease of use...only two knobs to set. The interior size is smaller than I thought it would be. Right now I can only fit a loaf pan inside. My 8x8 glass pans don't fit because of the handles, however, the 8x8 metal pan does. Also, any food cooked in a pan seems to get the top overcooked because it is so close the the heating element. I have solved this by covering with foil the first half of the cooking time.

Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY the Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven. I had one that the timer stopped working on after about a year. The end result of that was the toaster did not stop toasting and eventually caught fire. I foolishly ended up buying a newer model Toast-R-Oven, and had the same thing happen again today. Not sure if we even made it to the one year mark with this second one. The small price tag on this turns out not to be so small if you have to replace your Toast -R-Oven year after year or worse causes a fire in your home. I honestly can't believe this thing is even on the market.

We bought this little B&D toaster oven to replace one that we bought years ago and absolutely loved. We have had this one for a couple of months, and absolutely hate it. As others have reported, it does not turn off when it dings. More annoying, though, is that the top heating element burns any food taller than 1/2". I tried contacting B&D to see whether ours was somehow defective with the top shielding, and I got back a very generic response indicating they had no idea what I was talking about. This is one of those unfortunate incidences where they took a good product and ruined it by "improvements".

 "Don't Do It." 2009-06-24
By E. Rivera (NYC)
I bought this from Macy's and read some mixed reviews. I thought I also checked some on Amazon when I was doing some price comparisons. Maybe I read the wrong model or read that one good review out of the many bad ones. Well, bottom line is you should not buy this. Do not waste your time. I agree they should do a recall. I tested the toast setting for the first time with nothing inside to make sure it worked properly. When the timer hit light toast I put a piece of bread in it and long before the ding went off it started to turn black and burn along the edges. I threw the toast away and was going to try another setting when the door refused to open. Two people could not open it without fear of breaking the machine. When it completely cooled I managed to stick my small hand through the crack of the door to jam it out and get it ready to go back in the box for a full return. Imagine if the burnt toast was still inside or your kids got to it and it started burning. And when you pull the wire out of the socket which does create a spark, the timer is still going. Ahh! Pretty annoying, scary and time consuming.

"Dangerous -- should be recalled." 2009-06-12

My unit is less than one month old, and regardless how many minutes I set the timer for, or the toast darkness level, the timer stops ticking before it reaches zero, and so the unit stays "on" forever and burns everything.

It's a fire hazard that should be recalled. Even toasters from the '50s had automatic shut-off.

"The most dangerous thing I own" 2009-04-14
By Chris Craginday (New York, NY)
This toaster gets as hot on the outside as it does on the inside. Of course, Black and Decker provides a warning label on the outside of the toaster that says CAUTION: Hot surface, but that is an understatement. The toaster only toasts bread well within a 1/16th of an inch on the meter when it is working. But for the last twenty times I used it the TOASTER DIDN'T STOP TOASTING. After the fifth time of setting off the fire alarm and almost burning the house down, I threw the toaster oven away. This is a dangerous product.
