 "No good for toast" 2009-08-10
By P. Challingsworth
We have a 17-year old B&D toaster oven (under-cabinet) that worked extremely well. Eventually the push-down lever used for toasting became 'iffy' and sometimes would not latch down, so we bought this unit as a replacement.

The installation problems are covered pretty well in other reviews, so I won't repeat them.

Initially, the Toast function worked, but tends to toast the top side more than the bottom so you have you turn the toast over to finish it. After a few weeks I found that the heating elements started to cycle on and off while toasting. Before long it was taking over 10 minutes to get a slice of bread adequately done, but then it was so dry you couldn't cut it - it shattered.

I finally called the Support number to report this. They confirmed my belief that it should NOT cycle on/off when toasting. They gave me a reference number, and had me cut off the power plug (it has a date code on it) and send the plug back with a note about the problem and a check for $7.50 to cover shipping. Just over a week later I received a complete replacement unit. I hooked it up on the heat shield, plugged it in, and tested the Toast function. After a few minutes this unit also began to cycle on/off.

This is obviously a flaw in the design/manufacture, and until it is fixed I cannot recommend this unit.

I feel sorry for Black and Decker; having sold off their small domestic appliance division to Applica severeal years ago, Applica has proceeded to produce shoddy goods still using the B&D name. This happened with the original B&D Spacemaker coffee-maker - the B&D units were excellent and lasted for years, but the Applica versions barely went beyond the 1-year warranty.

"Not what I was hoping for!" 2009-08-05
By J. Bigelow (Boston, Massachusetts)
I purchased this spacemaker toaster oven and unfortunately, it did not fit the existing "holder" bolted to my cabinet. Also, I expected that since it was a Black and Decker toaster oven, it would also broil, top brown and include a baking tray along with the rack. The new one would just would toast and bake -- but only a certain amount of things. I generally bake 4 Pillsbury frozen biscuits when I make a chowder, and those would certainly not have been able to rise in that model toaster since the only rack level seemed to be in the middle of the oven. My "late" B-and-D toaster oven was just perfect for our needs, but, unfortunately, the glass door just shattered one day - it was at least 20 years old. I thought that this new oven would do the job, but, alas, it wouldn't have. When I saw the description "Spacemaker" I just assumed that it would fit my existing cabinet fixture as well as bake, broil , toast and top brown. I intend to keep looking for a toaster oven that will suit my needs. I'm 82 and my husband is 87 so we prefer to not use our regular oven if we don't have to.

"Bake's better than it toasts, installation requires longer screws and more spacers." 2009-08-02
By Jonathan F. Freidin (Marblehead, MA USA)
This is our third Black & Decker Under-The-Cabinet Toaster Oven. The previous model gave us many years of reliable service until one of the heating elements failed. I suspect this was caused by aluminum foil contacting the outside of the element, but I can't be sure. In any case the enclosed wire coil design of the new elements seems like a reliability improvement.

I asked my 18 year old son to install this one, and he obliged. This was months ago. I just read all of these other reviews explaining how difficult the installation was, so I never fully appreciated how difficult it was for my son to get everything lined up perfectly on the first try. Of course he reported that the screws were too short and there weren't enough spacers. Fortunately we had spacers left over from the previous model we had just removed. Funny we had to get longer screws for that one too, since we have a 1 3/8" inch cabinet underhang. Unfortunately the longer screws we had from before weren't long enough for this model, so he made a trip to the hardware store. Aside from these two problems, the mounting hood/deflector went in pretty smoothly and it plus the toaster oven look great installed.

The integrated timer is a great improvement over the earlier model since one of the few problems we had with it was leaving it turned on. This oven has plenty of room, and nice mechanical features. The baking and keep warm functions work fine, although I wonder how they differ from toasting. In fact I wonder what, if anything the cooking function selector does. Regardless of what mode I put it in, it appears to heat the oven to the the selected temperature for the amount of time on the timer. The only operational issue is that if you set the cooking function selector to toast and the temperature selector to toast, it will burn the toast almost immediately once the oven reaches temperature. The workaround is to set the temperature control to around 400 deg. F for toasting.

Pros:

Timer- and temperature- controlled bake and keep warm functions

Nice door, crumb tray release, under-the-cabinet mounting system

Roomy interior

Timer- and temperature- controlled toasting

Reliable temperature control

Cons:

Default toast setting burns toast

Requires longer screws and spacers, poor mounting instructions

It appears that Black & Decker has replaced this model with one that has electronic control. I'm hoping ours will last many years, so I have no idea if I'll have an opportunity to try that one.

 "Too many complainers" 2009-07-25
By rsinj
I purchased our toaster earlier this week before having read any reviews about it here. I reviewed many, many other toasters/ovens on Amazon, then went to Target with a couple in mind that were in stock. In general, I'm extremely disappointed in the quality of all toasters/toaster ovens out there right now. They felt like cheap aluminum boxes mass produced in China. Our Krups toaster oven has been with us for 10 or 15 years and was wonderful. In any case, while getting disgusted at what Target did have available, around the corner in the aisle with all the Black and Decker Spacesaver items I found this toaster and with a good sale price.

I get it home, quickly come here and see horror story after horror story. I'm wondering if I should even open the box or just take it back to Target immediately. Well, luckily I ignored the reviews here. Our Spacesaver can opener has been wonderful and I was going to give this toaster a shot.

Having been forewarned about all the problems and headaches others have had with installation, I read all the instructions, took my time, laid everything out, checked, double checked and even triple checked before drilling any holes. Everything installed fine - no problems whatsoever. I didn't need 4 hands, extra spacers, longer screws, and didn't have any issues which others bring up. The instructions are fairly clear, and for anything which wasn't, anyone with some spacial acumen can figure out how things need to fit together. The instruction booklet was also very clear that if you needed additional spacers, to simply call them and they'd send them free of charge.

So, the toaster was installed a few days ago and looks beautiful in the location of our old toaster oven, but we now find ourselves with more counter space - just wonderful. A couple days go by and finally someone wants a toasted bagel for breakfast. Instead of blindly setting the knob for how long to toast and walking away, we did the unthinkable - we watched it toast to get an idea of how long it takes. The reason people are saying it burns their toast is because the heating elements are powerful and it toasts quickly. What's the big deal with that? Our Krups toaster oven had two heating elements on the top and two on the bottom. I was slightly concerned because this one has only one on the top and one on the bottom - however, these are thicker, they heat up extremely quickly, and they are more powerful. So, we made a guess how long we should set the timer, watched, and turned it off when done - just a tad shorter than we estimated. It also toasted evenly - no complaints.

Long story short - ignore the reviews here that do nothing but complain.

1. Read all the instructions when installing

2. Double and triple check location of holes and hood before drilling

3. First few times cooking with it, watch how long things take before being bold enough to set the timer and walk away. It's powerful - that's a good thing.

"difficult installation / rude customer service (applica)" 2009-07-25
By Jonny W. Butler (Radford, VA United States)
All of the negative reviews are correct -- spacers fall off, bolts too short, template not adequate. In addition to that, the Applica customer service (at least the one I talked to about this appliance) left a lot to be desired. The upshot was -- go buy your own bolts and figure out how to make the spacers work. Fastenal has the bolts (5M80) which are not expesive unless you have to special order them (I did), and I solved the spacer problem by glueing the proper number of spacers together and then using double-sided tape to hold them to the bottom of the cabinet while one of us held the appliance and the other tightened the bolts. I also have the can opener and the coffee maker, neither of which were difficult to install. I can't believe that this manufacturer cannot find an engineer that can simplify this installation process and modify the template so you don't have to stand on your head to install the items. I solved that problem by tracing the template on the back, and working from the top. Not a good experience...... After all the trouble I went through to install this thing, I just hope it will last as long as the one I bought twenty years ago.........
