Toasts and bakes well. I just toasted an english muffin and it came out fine. (didn't understand review about not toasting). Makes nice, crispy (not burnt) waffles. Oven gets hot fast (less pre-heat time). Compact size (I live in an apartment so that's important). I gave it only 4 stars because it's not too attractive. But, it works well!

This is my first toaster oven. Wanted something simple, easy to use for baking pizza and rewarming slices. This one serves that purpose. Easy to clean. I use al. foil under slices so there's no clean-up at all.

 "Good Toaster Oven" 2006-07-12
By Rochelle Auran (Portland, OR USA)
I just bought this item and it seems to work fine. The dial toaster function is different from a push button but is is just as handy, plus you can more easily set the toast time to your preference. Another handy feature of the timer is that it can be used as a TIMER ONLY. Just set the temperature to zero and use the timer for up to 30 minutes, a real bonus in a small kitchen with limited counter space.

 "No good for toast" 2009-08-10
By P. Challingsworth
We have a 17-year old B&D toaster oven (under-cabinet) that worked extremely well. Eventually the push-down lever used for toasting became 'iffy' and sometimes would not latch down, so we bought this unit as a replacement.

The installation problems are covered pretty well in other reviews, so I won't repeat them.

Initially, the Toast function worked, but tends to toast the top side more than the bottom so you have you turn the toast over to finish it. After a few weeks I found that the heating elements started to cycle on and off while toasting. Before long it was taking over 10 minutes to get a slice of bread adequately done, but then it was so dry you couldn't cut it - it shattered.

I finally called the Support number to report this. They confirmed my belief that it should NOT cycle on/off when toasting. They gave me a reference number, and had me cut off the power plug (it has a date code on it) and send the plug back with a note about the problem and a check for $7.50 to cover shipping. Just over a week later I received a complete replacement unit. I hooked it up on the heat shield, plugged it in, and tested the Toast function. After a few minutes this unit also began to cycle on/off.

This is obviously a flaw in the design/manufacture, and until it is fixed I cannot recommend this unit.

I feel sorry for Black and Decker; having sold off their small domestic appliance division to Applica severeal years ago, Applica has proceeded to produce shoddy goods still using the B&D name. This happened with the original B&D Spacemaker coffee-maker - the B&D units were excellent and lasted for years, but the Applica versions barely went beyond the 1-year warranty.

"Not what I was hoping for!" 2009-08-05
By J. Bigelow (Boston, Massachusetts)
I purchased this spacemaker toaster oven and unfortunately, it did not fit the existing "holder" bolted to my cabinet. Also, I expected that since it was a Black and Decker toaster oven, it would also broil, top brown and include a baking tray along with the rack. The new one would just would toast and bake -- but only a certain amount of things. I generally bake 4 Pillsbury frozen biscuits when I make a chowder, and those would certainly not have been able to rise in that model toaster since the only rack level seemed to be in the middle of the oven. My "late" B-and-D toaster oven was just perfect for our needs, but, unfortunately, the glass door just shattered one day - it was at least 20 years old. I thought that this new oven would do the job, but, alas, it wouldn't have. When I saw the description "Spacemaker" I just assumed that it would fit my existing cabinet fixture as well as bake, broil , toast and top brown. I intend to keep looking for a toaster oven that will suit my needs. I'm 82 and my husband is 87 so we prefer to not use our regular oven if we don't have to.

"Bake's better than it toasts, installation requires longer screws and more spacers." 2009-08-02
By Jonathan F. Freidin (Marblehead, MA USA)
This is our third Black & Decker Under-The-Cabinet Toaster Oven. The previous model gave us many years of reliable service until one of the heating elements failed. I suspect this was caused by aluminum foil contacting the outside of the element, but I can't be sure. In any case the enclosed wire coil design of the new elements seems like a reliability improvement.

I asked my 18 year old son to install this one, and he obliged. This was months ago. I just read all of these other reviews explaining how difficult the installation was, so I never fully appreciated how difficult it was for my son to get everything lined up perfectly on the first try. Of course he reported that the screws were too short and there weren't enough spacers. Fortunately we had spacers left over from the previous model we had just removed. Funny we had to get longer screws for that one too, since we have a 1 3/8" inch cabinet underhang. Unfortunately the longer screws we had from before weren't long enough for this model, so he made a trip to the hardware store. Aside from these two problems, the mounting hood/deflector went in pretty smoothly and it plus the toaster oven look great installed.

The integrated timer is a great improvement over the earlier model since one of the few problems we had with it was leaving it turned on. This oven has plenty of room, and nice mechanical features. The baking and keep warm functions work fine, although I wonder how they differ from toasting. In fact I wonder what, if anything the cooking function selector does. Regardless of what mode I put it in, it appears to heat the oven to the the selected temperature for the amount of time on the timer. The only operational issue is that if you set the cooking function selector to toast and the temperature selector to toast, it will burn the toast almost immediately once the oven reaches temperature. The workaround is to set the temperature control to around 400 deg. F for toasting.

Pros:

Timer- and temperature- controlled bake and keep warm functions

Nice door, crumb tray release, under-the-cabinet mounting system

Roomy interior

Timer- and temperature- controlled toasting

Reliable temperature control

Cons:

Default toast setting burns toast

Requires longer screws and spacers, poor mounting instructions

It appears that Black & Decker has replaced this model with one that has electronic control. I'm hoping ours will last many years, so I have no idea if I'll have an opportunity to try that one.

 "Too many complainers" 2009-07-25
By rsinj
I purchased our toaster earlier this week before having read any reviews about it here. I reviewed many, many other toasters/ovens on Amazon, then went to Target with a couple in mind that were in stock. In general, I'm extremely disappointed in the quality of all toasters/toaster ovens out there right now. They felt like cheap aluminum boxes mass produced in China. Our Krups toaster oven has been with us for 10 or 15 years and was wonderful. In any case, while getting disgusted at what Target did have available, around the corner in the aisle with all the Black and Decker Spacesaver items I found this toaster and with a good sale price.

I get it home, quickly come here and see horror story after horror story. I'm wondering if I should even open the box or just take it back to Target immediately. Well, luckily I ignored the reviews here. Our Spacesaver can opener has been wonderful and I was going to give this toaster a shot.

Having been forewarned about all the problems and headaches others have had with installation, I read all the instructions, took my time, laid everything out, checked, double checked and even triple checked before drilling any holes. Everything installed fine - no problems whatsoever. I didn't need 4 hands, extra spacers, longer screws, and didn't have any issues which others bring up. The instructions are fairly clear, and for anything which wasn't, anyone with some spacial acumen can figure out how things need to fit together. The instruction booklet was also very clear that if you needed additional spacers, to simply call them and they'd send them free of charge.

So, the toaster was installed a few days ago and looks beautiful in the location of our old toaster oven, but we now find ourselves with more counter space - just wonderful. A couple days go by and finally someone wants a toasted bagel for breakfast. Instead of blindly setting the knob for how long to toast and walking away, we did the unthinkable - we watched it toast to get an idea of how long it takes. The reason people are saying it burns their toast is because the heating elements are powerful and it toasts quickly. What's the big deal with that? Our Krups toaster oven had two heating elements on the top and two on the bottom. I was slightly concerned because this one has only one on the top and one on the bottom - however, these are thicker, they heat up extremely quickly, and they are more powerful. So, we made a guess how long we should set the timer, watched, and turned it off when done - just a tad shorter than we estimated. It also toasted evenly - no complaints.

Long story short - ignore the reviews here that do nothing but complain.

1. Read all the instructions when installing

2. Double and triple check location of holes and hood before drilling

3. First few times cooking with it, watch how long things take before being bold enough to set the timer and walk away. It's powerful - that's a good thing.

"difficult installation / rude customer service (applica)" 2009-07-25
By Jonny W. Butler (Radford, VA United States)
All of the negative reviews are correct -- spacers fall off, bolts too short, template not adequate. In addition to that, the Applica customer service (at least the one I talked to about this appliance) left a lot to be desired. The upshot was -- go buy your own bolts and figure out how to make the spacers work. Fastenal has the bolts (5M80) which are not expesive unless you have to special order them (I did), and I solved the spacer problem by glueing the proper number of spacers together and then using double-sided tape to hold them to the bottom of the cabinet while one of us held the appliance and the other tightened the bolts. I also have the can opener and the coffee maker, neither of which were difficult to install. I can't believe that this manufacturer cannot find an engineer that can simplify this installation process and modify the template so you don't have to stand on your head to install the items. I solved that problem by tracing the template on the back, and working from the top. Not a good experience...... After all the trouble I went through to install this thing, I just hope it will last as long as the one I bought twenty years ago.........

 "Doesn't meet durability expectations." 2009-08-13
By Often in error; never in doubt (Virginia, USA)
We've had this Rival CO606 Toaster oven for 2 1/2 years and were generally pleased with it, except for occasional weird squawking noises from the convection fan, and for the lack of any way to turn off the convection for normal baking. We especially liked its ability to handle a 12" pizza, which it baked very well. It also performed well at toasting, baking small casseroles, pies, etc. We never used it for broiling.

However, one of the calrod broil/toast elements burst with a blast of white light while toasting, and I have been unable to locate any source for replacement parts. No one expects things to last forever, but our previous toaster oven lasted closer to ten years, not 2 1/2.

By J. Stack (Wantagh, NY United States)
After reading the reviews on Amazon I cautiously ordered this mostly because most reviewers gave it good marks for even toasting. If I could return it locally and did not have to mail it back to Amazon I would return it. The Red power light went out almost immediately and if it were not for the noise it makes, yes, I said noise, you could easily forget that you did not turn it off. With the power light not working you can't tell by looking at it if you accidentally left it on. The noise can be minor or at times very annoying. I would almost say that it rattles at times. Cooking and toasting though are both very good in my opinion and that is why I'm keeping it. I can get over the noise factor and the light not working. The unit cooks in less time and more evenly than my last Toaster-Oven. Two stars overall, no stars for quality and four stars for cooking.

 "Potential DANGEROUS Flaw BEWARE!" 2008-03-11
By JJM (Dayton, Ohio)
Worked fine for one year. Then the top elements stopped working. I took a closer look inside the oven and could see that two top elements had WARPED. They were so bent that they were touching the inside-top of the oven. I used this mainly as a toaster, so the toasting function was used 5x a week. Rival has not recalled the item. The top element warping problem is a DANGEROUS flaw. DO NOT BUY!

"worked great for 18 months, then threw sparks" 2008-03-10
By Ryan
Received as a wedding gift, and my wife and I were thrilled with the unit for about 18 months. Then it started throwing a burning/electrical smell. A couple weeks later, I caught it throwing sparks out the side!

Since I was out of the 1 yr warranty, I figured no harm could be done by trying to repair it myself.

Found two 1N5408 diodes, one of which was burnt and snapped in half. Cost to purchase new diodes - about $0.25.

Cost to purchase new toaster oven - $50 minimum.

So if you have this unit, find that it starts makes an electrical burning odor, and have a soldering gun, it can be repaired in a very cost effective manner.

Regardless - a toaster oven only lasting 18 months is pretty poor, which is why I rate this only 2 stars.

"After 48 Years, This Book Tops The Best Sellers List" 2009-08-24
By prisrob (New EnglandUSA)

Julia Child et al, wrote this mastery of a cookbook over 48 years ago. It has finally made the best seller list this week. The success of the film 'Julia and Julie' and the book of the same name has given Julia Child a leg up! It is surprising that women who have bought this cookbook are surprised at the amount of butter involved. Americans are afraid of butter. The French use butter and always have in great proportions, but they also eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and they walk- they walk everywhere.

Nora Ephron, Director of 'Julie and Julia' says she had as a goal of her film that people would buy Julia's book. Not only buy it, but cook with it. And, they have in numbers that run into the thousands, 22, 000 to be exact. The recipes are not difficult, they take a little extra time, that's all. This is not 'put your dinner on the table in 30 minutes' cookbook. Do you remember Julia Child's cooking show on PBS? We used to watch it every week and laugh along with her as she dropped the chicken on the floor, picked it up and said, no one is here but me!

The food looked luscious, even in black and white. My first recipe was the Beef Bourgione and it is still a staple in my kitchen. He pate brisee is also the best recipe for pie crust and it is so much easier now with a blender. Pie Crust that is flaky and buttery and supports the filling. I recently made a blueberry pie, the entire family was ecstatic. Their favorite is chocolate creme pie but a fresh blueberry pie in the summer with vanilla ice cream tops a meal!

I received Julia Child's 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' again for my birthday this year. It replaced the old tattered copy that has its rightful place in my bookcase. The old one was used and showed it, but isn't that what we want in our cookbooks? Julis would be pleased, I think. Unlike, Julie, I am not going to try each recipe, but will go for my tried and true and some new ones, in memory of Julia.

Bon Appetit! You can't beat that!

Highly Recommended. prisrob 08-23-09

By Just Loves Books (Alabama)
I ordered this after seeing the movie. I was a little concerned about whether I really wanted the revised edition or try to find an original. I ordered this one, and was so pleased. It has the original instructions and then a note, like with aspic..It has the instructions for using the calf foot, like in the movie "Julie and Julia" and then tells you how to use boxed gelatin instead, since it is readily available now.

I, a down-home Southern cook, at the age of 53, who thought no one could teach this old dog new tricks, have Boeuf Bourguignon simmering in my oven as I write this, and my husband said the house smells better than it ever has with anything cooking (and he loves my cooking!) The only bad part of this recipe is smelling it, wanting to eat it, and having to wait for it to cook slowly in the oven!

Julia Child is a genius, and I can't wait to try more recipes! Love, Love, Love this cookbook. But now I want new cookware and knives............

"The BEST book about cooking that I own" 2009-08-11
By Sekhmet2 (Philadelphia)
When you start to use this cookbook, it is easy to understand why it has remained a classic since 1961. It is not like the usual cookbook with big, beautiful photographs, a long list of ingredients and directions on putting everything together. It includes commentary by Julia Child that is really funny sometimes and very useful in understanding how the various ingredients work to make the dish. And, not all the recipes require hours to assemble. The vegetable dishes, in particular, are fairly easy.

I just made Boeuf A La Bourguignonne (Beef Stew) from this book that is included in the movie, "Julia & Julia", for a pre-theater gathering at my house. I served the dish as an appetizer so my friends would know what it tasted like when we went to see the movie. Everyone loved it. When you make this dish, it is easy to see why it is so different from most other beef stew recipes. Each of the ingredients--stew beef, pearl onions, mushrooms, carrots, onions-- is treated individually to get the most flavor and then combined at the end to make the dish. Fantastic flavor! It is so rich that it just melts in your mouth.

If you love French food and want to make some in your home, get this book. This is the definitive book on the subject and it is not that hard to make incredible dishes.

I have made these dishes: Salade Nicoise, Ratatouille, Whole Baked Tomatoes, Chicken Breasts with Mushrooms and Cream, Fish Filets poached in White Wine and Eggs Baked in Ramekins. I highly recommend each.

 "Pretty good, not great" 2009-08-23
By Nikki P. (Arlington,VA)
I like the basic plot idea which is that Claire (the wife) knows Henry (the time traveler) since she was a girl and when they meet in the present she knows him but he doesn't know her yet. See Henry doesn't remember his travels through time, only that he ends up with no shoes and frostbite when he returns. It's a dangerous and unpredictable job this time travel, much like being married to a soldier who goes to Iraq. He leaves and he's gone you worry he will not return home. So sci-fi it is not. Love story it sort of is. But once it explores their married life it wasn't all that interesting in to me. And it's very morose. Time travel is not fun for married people, people! Plus the details of the time travel is spotty at best and the ending wasn't as rewarding as I'd hoped. The writing is good though and it is a book I wanted to read through to the end.

By TNPatti (Portland, TN United States)
After hearing rave reviews, I was disappointed in this book. The premise is great and I didn't have too much trouble following the characters through the twisted plot line. The fact is this book is just too long. There's not enough story to carry it for the 17 hours I listened. It was like the author had to use every adjective she ever knew when a couple would have been satisfactory. The telling of the long dreams was just plain boring. The long passages in French were irritating. I found it to be somewhat pretentious. A good editor could have cut this book by a third and had a truly great novel. All that being said, I still found it interesting enough to finish.

"At last a perfect toaster oven" 2009-07-13

Cuisinart TOB-195 Exact Heat Toaster Oven Broiler, Stainless

Stop! Stop looking for a near perfect toaster oven. We, finally, found it. After five years of aggregation, we've found it.

To give you ideas of some of the wasted time, etc.: 1. We literally in a matter of a few weeks bought and returned two toaster ovens. Then we just settled for the least of the evils we found at Walmart. 2. It lasted about six months until it burned out and we returned it to the mfr. and received a new one. 3. The new toaster oven lasted about a year until one morning it popped and spit sparks. We actually had never really liked this unit because the controls were hard to read and the heating erratic. By the way, we had carried out a great deal of research both on Consumers Report's web site and the reviews on the Amazon web site before we ever bought the first toaster oven.

Well, one more time we researched toaster ovens and reluctantly decided we had to up grade to a more expensive model and so decided to give the Cusinart TOB 165 (This is the white version) a try. Oh, my gosh! It is wonderful! After four months we have not found anything wrong. It is a pleasure to use it at least three times a day. It is easy to operate and performs perfectly.

"A great oven with some flaws" 2009-07-06
By Walter Pirie (VA, USA)
We've used this oven several times a day for several years. It saves a lot of use on our main oven and allowed us to eliminate the toaster in our kitchen. It's more a small, full service oven than just a typical toaster oven. As a toaster it's a bit slow but very effective with a lot of options.

It does have its flaws though. A small one is that the crumb tray pulls out from the back which means the oven must be moved. It would require a total re-design to correct that and it's more a nuisance than a defect. A bigger one is that the glass door is not removable and it's very difficult to keep clean in place. That would take a minor modification in design and should be corrected, so it could be cleaned in the sink. Another major one is the white metal and plastic exterior, which is impractical because of the continual exposure to high heat. The white, plastic control panel developed several cracks and partially peeled off after several months. Also the white enamel on the metal body deteriorated badly, also from the heat.

On the plus side, the stainless steel interior and broiler tray are well designed and easy to clean.

They have a newer, slightly larger model of the identical design and stainless steel exterior. We just replaced our old one with the newer model in the hope the exterior will hold up better. The larger size will fit a 12" pizza, which might be useful too.

It performs it's cooking and timing chores very well, BUT you can tell how hot the exterior gets by the fact that a third of the paint has chipped on the face (sides are still OK), making it very hard to keep looking clean. Basically, it looks as though a roast exploded on the inside and face of the unit. We can't get it clean - and even if we could, it still looks really bad with all the paint cracks and chips missing.

The convection fan has always been noisy. Definitely would not recommend to anyone because of the cosmetic appearance (unless you want to keep it in your basement or garage).

"Not all its "Cracked Up" to be" 2009-06-29
By dpwstory (Boston Area)
We loved this product for over a year, and with the minor annoyance of the crumb tray being hard to access, it cooked well. The toasting could be crisper, but for cooking small ovens of food, we had been very happy. HOWEVER the paint began cracking above the door. This is not isolated, as my in-laws loved our oven and purchased one of their own. As they are older and only cook smaller meals, their use of the oven is even greater - theirs is really cracked, with paint curling up. I don't want the paint bits falling into my/my kids' food as it comes out the oven. It also looks terrible. We have relegated it to the basement, and are using a toaster only in the meantime. I have noticed superior toast since using a toaster. We hope another maker of toaster ovens comes out with a good convection toaster oven. I've been looking for a stainless one which will not burn my hand which also gets good reviews.

 "Please read the manual." 2009-06-09
By Douglas R. Chandler (Dallas,TX USA)
This appliance does a lot of things. To do this the control choices can be complex. It is not an appliance that is intuitive to use in my opinion. That said, I have baked, convection baked, toasted, and broiled on this oven successfully. It fits my need of living as a single person in an apartment perfectly. READ THE MANUAL, don't just give it a quick overlook and dive in.

Broiling for example. Don't forget to do the warm up sequence with the door closed,(It will alarm when it hits broiling temperature) don't forget to put the 1/4 cup of water in the drip tray. Don't forget to open the door of the oven to the first 1 inch detent to vent the oven after you put the meat in. Don't forget to also set your timer for the amount of time to cook one side, flip your meat, then set the timer for the remaining time. This procedure is why there is not an automatic off for the broiling option. On the other hand, since it toasts both sides of the bread, it has a timing shut off function for toast.

Replaced the Cuisinart Convection Oven Toaster / Broiler CTO-390PC with this one. I'm happy with it so far--though the other comments make me concerned. Where oh where is the perfect toaster?

 "works well, has issues" 2009-02-13

We had one of these for just short of its 3 year guarantee period, within which time the paint on the interior walls was all coming off, and the door hinge stopped working right. Cuisinart honored the guarantee and sent us a new one, which we've had for just a few weeks. It really works great in terms of even baking and has enabled us to use our full-size oven much less, and it toasts well. It looks great and is easy to clean. I'm hoping they've solved the paint issue, which made me nervous, and that the door will hold up this time....but having read the other reviews here, I guess I won't get my hopes up!

"I liked this toaster oven at first" 2009-02-04
By memphis girl
I really liked this toaster oven for the first year, but then I too got the door issue so many prior reviewers have mentioned. I finally stopped slamming the door because nothing keeps it closed anymore. The larger issue with my oven is the lack of temperature control. Sometime in the last year+, I've lost control of the bake temperature. I keep the temperature dial turned all the way down and watch everything to keep it from burning in a flash. Unknowingly, my boyfriend turned up the temperature one night based on the package instructions of whatever he was cooking. Not only did the food burn in the blink of the eye, but the plug got so hot that it melted it to the outlet. I am surprised the thing didn't burn down the house.

I moved down a level from the one I had used before and would not do it again. The little bit more you will pay is well worth it in the long run in quality and performance. I've learned my lesson.

 "Performance just OK" 2009-01-26

The toaster takes a while to toast. Uneven toasting with some areas burnt asnd others OK. Not an exceptional toaster for thec brand.
